With his kinetic sound-light-sculpture Torso, Peter Kutin explores how the movement, acceleration and deceleration of sound-sources can be used from a musical and compositional perspective. The first version of Torso (#1) received the golden Nica for digital music and sound art at Ars Electronica in 2019. In Split, Kutin will spend some time in the gallery, investigating the acoustics of the venue and creating the somewhat site-specific set up of Torso. Moreover, he is preparing a live performance on his sounding-lightning-rotating sculpture for the opening of the exhibition.

For Torso, Kutin composes for a custom-made-, rotating-, quadrophonic- sound system. Four old 100-Volt speakers rotate on a 2.5m long horizontal axis. The speakers’ movements are visible, affecting the audience in unusual and confounding ways. Observing the speaker’s circular movements while perceiving the ever-changing composition evoke a wholly unorthodox listening experience. For the structure of the object, Kutin drew inspiration from a klopotec – a variety of bird-scaring windmill found in central Europe.

Peter Kutin is an Austrian musician, instrument builder and filmmaker working with lights and electronics. Collaborations include electronic music pioneer Christina Kubisch, renowned filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter and drummer Katharina Ernst. He is a founding member of the label Ventil-Records, the concert series Velak-Gala (platform for experimental music), the RealDeal Festival and the ’sonic-laboratory‘ Westbahnstudios in Vienna.
