Acid House
SHORT ANIMATED FILM PROGRAM (68′) / AMPHITHEATRE
Directors: Suzan Pitt (US), Stephen Vuillemin (FR), Sawako Kabuki (JP), Yoriko Mizushiri (JP), Tomek Popakul (PL)
A sensually punk program for both watching and listening. About encounters with oneself, the trance of being lost and found, dreams translated into a visual language full of color, and a psychedelic love for music.
Asparagus, dir. Suzan Pitt (US, 1979, 17’)
A visual poem by the legendary independent animator, woven like a mechanism of daydreaming. A faceless woman, or magician, guides us through fantastic visions of the creative forces that govern all existence, seen through the prism of sexuality and artistic introspection. From the phallic stalk ripening into a delicate fern to its transformation into a kaleidoscopic symphony of colors and shapes. From the dissolution of the longing gaze upon a hallucinatory garden filled with totemic flora to the projections of her visions from a bag of wonders, before an astonished audience in a theater of optical illusions. A masterpiece of surrealist animation that gained cult status through midnight screenings alongside David Lynch’s Eraserhead.
A Kind of Testament, dir. Stephen Vuillemin (FR, 2023, 16’)
How reality and fiction produce their own images in lavish colors. A young woman discovers online animations that are clearly made from her private selfies, while a stranger with the same name admits to identity theft—leaving the question unanswered: why?
Ketsujiru Juke / Anal Juice, dir. Sawako Kabuki (JP, 2013, 3′)
An intense audiovisual remix of her state of mind triggered by a dream about an ex-boyfriend, the deep pain of a breakup, and the charged atmosphere in Japan shaken by the catastrophic earthquakes and tsunami of March 11, 2011.
Futon, dir. Yoriko Mizushiri (JP, 2012, 6′)
Wrapped in a futon, everything melts pleasantly together. Memories resurface, sensations awaken, the future is imagined… Deeply rooted feelings of femininity.
Acid Rain, dir. Tomek Popakul (PL, 2019, 26’)
Somewhere in the Eastern European backwoods, a lonesome girl runs away from home. She encounters a weirdo named Skinny, who takes her on an adventure of pulsating melancholy, youthful desire, illegal substances, and the raw energy of early raves. A masterful study of the rave party atmosphere, its simultaneous allure and repulsion, underscored by a soundtrack from acid house veterans.
